So What Is CPD?
Continuing professional development in healthcare (CPD) is the term used to describe the learning activities care professionals engage in to develop and enhance their abilities.
Any activity that contributes to your learning and development within a professional capacity counts as CPD.
These activities include attending a live workshop or conference, on-the-job learning, completing an e-learning course, researching new techniques or practices, or simply reflecting on work practices through supervision and appraisals.
An activity can count towards your CPD as long as it enables you to apply the knowledge through reflection or practical application within your role as a care professional.
As the name suggests, continuing professional development in healthcare is an ongoing process as long as your performing within a professional capacity within the health and social care field.
The CPD Portfolio: Demonstrating Evidence
As part of your CPD, you’re required to record evidence to demonstrate the knowledge and skills you’ve acquired or developed. This is usually referred to as your CPD portfolio or your CPD record.
Not only does your CPD portfolio act as a place for demonstrating your professional development, it is also useful for:
- Keeping all your relevant documents together
- Reflecting on your learning – recording your career plan in your personal development plan (PDP)
- Preparing for applications and job interviews
So learning how to record CPD activities in a way that is compliant is very important.
