Staff training for health and social care organisations can be complex but an integral part of what you deliver.
Today, health and social care is competitive and you'll need to ensure that your organisation and care staff operate at a high level.
Before looking at the training available for your staff, you may be interested to know the benefits of why staff training for health and social care teams is important and how it can lead you to developing and maintaining a competitive edge whilst achieving your business goals.
why Staff training Is important in health and social care
In 2017, the Competition and Markets Authority published a study titled Care Homes Market Study 2017. They found that the cost of care was not the main factor in decision-making for self-funders and their family members.
Instead, care providers stated that the quality of care was the main way they attracted customers/clients - and that the quality of staff was key to establishing, providing, and evidencing this quality of care.
For sure, where you're located and the facilities available play a part in choosing a care home or domiciliary service.
However, by far, your true asset is your staff team. Many people seeking care provision will do their due diligence to discover whether the quality of care is up to par.
If your care home or organisation are staffed with people with high level and specific qualifications, where continuous professional development (CPD) is on the list of priorities, you'll stand a better chance meeting the needs of your users and your organisation.
The Benefits of staff training in health and social care
Here are five reasons why investing in the training of care home staff is critical to business success:
1. Training Staff Improves The Quality of Care You Offer Your Residents
People enter the care industry because they want to make a positive difference in the lives of the people they look after. They're driven by the need to help others. To do this effectively, they must be trained. Accredited training for health and social care employees will improve their performance.
2. Improves Your CQC Rating
People are becoming more aware of CQC ratings as a method of determining the standard of care provided. When CQC conducts an inspection, they will want to know that you 'deploy enough suitably qualified, competent and experienced staff' to enable you to meet all your obligations under the Health and Social Care Act 2008
On its website, the CQC states that:
"To meet the regulation, providers must provide sufficient numbers of suitably qualified, competent, skill and experienced staff to meet the needs of the people using the service at all times and the other regulatory requirements set out in this part of the above regulations.
Staff must receive the support, training, professional development, supervision and appraisals that are necessary for them to carry out their role and responsibilities. They should be supported to obtain further qualifications and provide evidence, where required, to the appropriate regulator to show that they meet the professional standards needed to continue to practice."
Little wonder that where ratings of 'poor' or 'inadequate' have been given, a significant factor is often cited as unqualified or underqualified staff and poor management of those staff.
3. Increases Loyalty and The Benefits It Produces
Training for care home staff is a key strategy to improving loyalty. Organisations who are committed to helping their employees develop their careers will discover that those staff feel more engaged.
Employee engagement does more than increase productivity. When employees feel valued, appreciated and part of a successful team, you'll find that you'll benefit from:
- Lower staff turnover
- Lower absenteeism
- Fewer safety incidents
- Better quality of work
With improved employee engagement, you'll also find your image improves, recruitment costs fall and it becomes easier to attract talented people to work for you.
4. Training Staff Increases Business Opportunities
With more highly qualified staff and with employees qualified in a wider range of related disciplines, your care home or domiciliary services will have the opportunity to offer new services to clients.
This increases business opportunities for your care home or domiciliary services, attracting new and different clients in higher-margin care offerings.
5. Increase Dignity and Choices for Residents
With more highly skilled staff, your residents will be better cared for. Your staff will better understand the needs of your service users or residents. They will treat them as equals, giving control of care to the resident.
With more choice and greater autonomy, a resident will live a more dignified life in the care home.
Training of staff takes care homes and domiciliary care to a new level.
Residents are discomforted by high staff turnover, and clients don't want to pay good money to a care home that regulators don't consider offer a satisfactory level of care.
Staff training in health and social care increases loyalty and decreases absenteeism and staff turnover.
People today consider care as a consumer choice. They will consider the attitude and enjoyment of employees and care provided by staff before cost.
To help them make the choice you want them to make, staff training for health and social care organisations is simply essential.

Each credit is per course per learner with the certificate and reporting modules stating the learner’s name and record of progression. This aids compliance and keeps reporting in one place, saving you both time and paperwork.
Example, you have 5 learners that need fire safety. You would purchase 5 fire safety courses and allocate 1 course individually to each of the 5 learners.
What If I have a lot of staff members that need training?
We will give you full training and guide you on how to maximise the system and the courses for your business. The more you purchase, the greater the savings.
I have several staff, how many credits do I purchase?
It is 1 credit per learner per course.
Example, you have 10 learners that need 5 courses each, you would need 50 credits. (10 learners x 5 courses = 50 credits).
These can be purchased on a pay as you go or bulk purchase, we leave you with the flexibility of choice.
What is a credit?
A credit is for the allocation of 1 CPD course per learner. A credit does not expire. This is applicable to CPD courses, ebooks and video learning.
Once the credit is allocated the learner will have 12 months to action the course.
A credit does not cover a qualification or the care certificate package. These are purchased separately.
How much is the cost for the learner management system?
We do not charge any fee to use the LMS. It’s free to use.
